How To Find Car Insurance That Fits Your Budget By Kelly Smith Having on your car is mandatory in most US states, and so it is an item that has to be in your budget. With the recent downturn in the US economy, more and more people are looking for ways to cut costs, and to reduce their monthly spending budget. There are some ways to make car more affordable without sacrificing essential coverage that you need.
Most states have minimum coverage requirements. These range from liability-only coverage to additional coverage such as uninsured motorist and/or no fault coverage. The first step to finding budget car is to find out what coverage your state laws require. You can find this information online, or by calling your state's department of motor vehicles.
If your budget is limited, you may be tempted to go for the absolute least amount of coverage possible, to make it more affordable. You need to keep in mind, however, that minimum coverage may leave you in a difficult place if you have an accident. It may be worth paying a little more for some added coverage that will save your wallet down the road if you have a claim.
If you only have liability coverage on your vehicle, that would cover any injuries and property damages (up to the limits of your policy) done to the other party, but it would not cover your medical costs and/or property damage to your vehicle in case of an accident.
Here are some tips for saving money on car insurance:
1. If possible, pay your car policy in full. If you have a six-month policy, and you pay it all up front, you may receive a paid-in-full discount. You can also have the company take money out of your credit card or bank account each month to avoid the possibility
of missing any payments (there may be small extra charge for doing this -- check with your company).
2. Mention any safety features that you may have installed on your car, such as a LoJack or alarm system. Standard safety features on your car may give you an automatic discount.
3. If you have more than one vehicle in your household, make sure they are insured by the same company. This will qualify you for multiple car discounts. You will also save money if you have a homeowners or renters policy with the same company.
4. Buy only the coverage you need. You may want to discuss your coverage needs at least once a year with your agent. You may be able to reduce your coverage due to the age of your vehicle, changing family situations, etc.
5. Get a longer-term policy. Some 3- or 6- month policies may come with penalties. In general, the longer the term, the lower the rates.
6. Drive safely and Avoid Tickets. A clean record will always give you lower premiums. Accidents, particularly where you are at fault, may raise your premiums for 3 to 5 years. If you do have an accident, make sure that the correct details are on your records. Don't lie to your agent about any tickets or accidents.
5. Don't let your lapse. You may find it hard to be re-insured, and the costs may be considerably higher for after you've had a lapse in coverage. Be sure to always keep at least the minimum required coverage.
Finding affordable on a budget can be a difficult task, but it is doable. The most important thing is to shop around. The same level of coverage can cost a lot more with some companies than others. It pays to do your homework.
